Part 3, Step 1: Look at an Overview of Part 3

What is Part 3?
Part 3 is two fiction passages with 5 multiple choice questions.  More importantly, you will have to write two paragraphs about those passages.  These paragraphs are a HUGE part of your grade, about 24% of your overall grade (the difference between a 68 and a 44, or between an 80 and a 56).

What are the directions Part 3?
[Directions for Multiple Choice: On the following pages read Passage I (an excerpt from a memoir) and Passage II (a poem) about [here they give you the controlling idea]. You may use the margins to take notes as you read. Answer the multiple-choice questions on the answer sheet provided for you. Then write your response for question 26 on page 1 of your essay booklet and question 27 on page 2 of your essay booklet.

[Directions for Question 26, the Controlling Idea Paragraph: 26. Write a well-developed paragraph in which you use ideas from both Passage I (the novel excerpt) and Passage II (the poem) to establish a controlling idea about relationships. Develop your controlling idea using specific examples and details from both Passage I and Passage II]

[Directions for Question 27, the Literary Elements Paragraph: 27.  Choose a specific literary element (e.g., theme, characterization, structure, point of view, etc.) or literary technique (e.g., symbolism, irony, figurative language, etc.) used by one of the authors. Using specific details from either Passage I (the novel excerpt) or Passage II (the poem), in a well-developed paragraph, show how the author uses that element or technique to develop the passage.]  ( I crossed out the literary elements you should NOT use)

What kind of Passages are in Part 1?
The texts are 2 fiction passages, one story and one poem.  They are connected by a controlling idea, which is a theme that they both share (i.e. they both teach you the same thing about life).

What is the best strategy for Part 3?

Strategies for Question 26, the Controlling Idea Paragraph

            · Establish a controlling idea that FURTHERS your idea about the theme (Example: if the controlling idea is relationships, well then what does that passage teach us ABOUT relationships?)

Claim: Both passages show that relationships can help you through a hard time.

            · IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE WORD THEY GIVE YOU MEANS, then assume it is the same as the MAIN IDEA OF BOTH PASSAGES.
            · Underline/choose lines in both passages that support your idea
            · Follow this format for your paragraph:
                    o Claim: State your idea
                    o Clarify: Explain your idea
o Evidence: Provide Evidence to support your idea
                    o Justify: Justify your evidence
            · Sentence Starters:
                    Claim: “Both passages show that…”
                    Clarify: “This means that…”
                    Evidence: “In passage 1, _______. In passage 2, _________.”
                    Justify: “This shows that…”

Strategies for Question 27, the Literary Elements Paragraph

                ·      Use the controlling idea from the first paragraph
            ·      ID a literary technique or element that supports or furthers your idea
                        o   Use:
Characterization
Symbolism
Setting
                        o   DON’T USE:
Theme
Structure
Point of View
Irony
            ·      Follow this format for your paragraph:
                        o   Claim: State your idea
                        o   Clarify: Explain your idea
o   Evidence: Provide Evidence to support your idea
                        o   Justify: Justify your evidence
            ·      Sentence Starters:
Claim: “In Passage 1, the author uses characterization to show that…”
                        Clarify: “This means that…”
                        Evidence: Quote from text
                        Justify: “This shows that…”
