Part 3, Step 3: Practice Grading the Paragraphs

The Paragraphs are the most important part of getting a good grade on the Regents.  They are scored out of 2.  It is hard to get a 2, and hard to get a 0, but easy to get a 1.  YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET A 1.  If you get 1s (not 0s, but 1s) instead of 2s on both paragraphs, that's 12 points off your Regents.  That's the difference between failing and a 75.  The following checklist will tell you how they are graded.

How are Q26 and Q27 graded?

Question 26:

You get a 2 if you:
o Have a claim that extends the controlling idea
o Have a claim that is true for BOTH passages
o Have a quote or great detail from BOTH passages
o Have a complete paragraph, with explanation of your ideas

You get a 1 if you:
o Miss any one of the things above

Question 27:

You get a 2 if you:
o Have a claim that correctly uses a literary element (characterization, symbolism)
o Have a claim that connects the literary element to THE MAIN IDEA of ONE text
o Have a quote or great detail from ONE passage
o Have a complete paragraph, with explanation of your ideas

You get a 1 if you:
o Miss any one of the things above
